HSY built one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the Nordic countries in the rock at Blominmäki, Espoo. The wastewater treatment basins and the bulk of the plant facilities were placed in a cavern excavated underground; the biogas plant and administrative buildings were placed in the above-ground section. The plant serves residents of Espoo and Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi, Siuntio and Western Vantaa.

Ardor's delivery covered over 10kilometres of process piping. The contract included the above-ground biogas plant in its entirety as well as the underground compressor room, C1 and C2corridors, screening room, sand separation, reject water treatment and polymer room piping. The requirements of the different spaces, in terms of materials,pressure classes and installation conditions, vary significantly, which makes managing the whole particularly demanding.

The scale of the project, nearly 50km of piping across the entire scheme, requires suppliers to coordinate deliveries over a long time horizon and align them with the progression of the rock excavation. Ardor's prefabrication-driven approach was well suited to underground construction, where installation space is limited and logistics must be carefully planned.
